PHI-Certified Windows: What the Certificate Actually Guarantees

Certification classes, the component database, and how PHI windows compare to Energy Star and Canadian standards — so you can tell a real certificate from a sticker.

"PHI-certified" is the most meaningful label a window can carry in Canada — and the most abused. This guide explains what the certificate covers, what the classes mean, and how the standard compares to the labels Canadian buyers already know.

The four PHI certification classes

The Passive House Institute doesn't issue one blanket certificate. It certifies components in climate-specific classes. For Canada, the ones that matter:

Passive House Classic — the base level: Uw ≤ 0.80 W/m²·K for windows in cool-temperate climates like southern Ontario. This is the class most "PHI-certified" Canadian projects reference.

Passive House Plus and Premium — building-level classes that add renewable energy generation requirements. For windows, the component requirement is the same Uw ≤ 0.80; the difference is at the building level.

Low Energy Building — a relaxed variant (Uw ≤ 0.85) used for buildings that don't target full Passive House. If a supplier quotes "PHI Low Energy certified," that's a real class — but it's a step below Classic.

The practical takeaway: when a Canadian supplier says "PHI-certified windows" without naming the class, ask. The honest answer names Classic and produces a certificate number.

How to verify: the PHI Component Database

Every certified window, door, and component appears in the PHI Component Database at database.passivehouse.com, each with a unique certificate ID. The database lists the manufacturer, the exact system name, the certified sizes, and the tested values — Uw, Ug, Uf, and installation variants.

This is what makes PHI certification different from every marketing label in the industry: it's publicly checkable. Two minutes with a certificate number tells you whether the window you're being quoted is actually the one that passed the climate chamber. A supplier who won't give you the number is telling you everything you need to know.

Energy Star is a useful minimum bar and easy to find at big-box retailers. But it wasn't designed for the performance ceiling — an Energy Star window can still lose more than 50% more heat than a PHI-certified unit. Canadian standards like CSA A440 test durability and structural loads, which PHI doesn't replace; the two overlap, and quality European systems carry both.

What Uw ≤ 0.80 means in an Ontario winter

Uw is the whole-window heat loss coefficient: frame, glass, and edge combined. At Uw ≤ 0.80, a window loses roughly half the heat of a typical builder-grade unit (Uw 1.8–2.2). The consequence you'll notice first isn't the gas bill — it's that the air near the window in January doesn't feel cold, and condensation doesn't form on the frame during a cold snap.

PHI also tests interior surface temperature. Certified units keep the inner frame face above 17°C even at −10°C outside. That's the difference between a window you can sit next to in winter and one that creates a dead zone in the living room.

What certified windows cost in Canada

In the GTA, PHI-certified windows run roughly $1,200–$2,000 per opening installed — above high-performance triple-pane ($800–$1,400) but delivering certified Uw ≤ 0.80 rather than a manufacturer's claim. For a Passive House or Net-Zero project the certified unit isn't an upgrade, it's the spec. For a standard renovation, the premium buys measurable heat-loss reduction, draft elimination, and the warm-frame comfort described above.

The checklist before you buy

1. Get the certificate number. No number, no certificate — full stop.

2. Look it up at database.passivehouse.com. Confirm the system name matches your quote.

3. Ask for the class. Classic is the Canadian reference point. "Low Energy" is a different, lower bar.

4. Ask for Uw, not Ug. Ug is glass-only; Uw is the window. A supplier dodging Uw is hiding the frame's performance.
