Window Condensation in Toronto Winters: Why It Happens and What Actually Fixes It
Condensation on your windows is arithmetic, not a defect: when indoor air at 21°C holds more humidity than the glass surface temperature can support, water forms. The fix is either less indoor humidity, warmer glass — or both.

Why do my windows sweat in the winter?
Every volume of air holds a maximum amount of water vapour, and that maximum drops as temperature drops. The temperature where the air you're in can't hold its moisture any more is the dew point. When air in the room touches a surface colder than the dew point, the vapour condenses onto that surface — your glass.
Here's the part most people miss: your window isn't creating the moisture. The moisture is already in the house — from showers, cooking, drying laundry indoors, houseplants, and people breathing. The window is just the coldest surface in the room, so it's where the moisture shows up first.

So at a normal winter indoor humidity of 40%, condensation appears on any surface colder than roughly 7°C. Whether your glass gets that cold depends on its U-value — the lower the U-value, the warmer the indoor face of the glass stays.
Which windows sweat — and at what humidity?

What actually fixes window condensation?
There are three levers, and none of them is "wipe more often":
1. Lower the indoor humidity. Target 30–40% in a Toronto winter. Run bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans for 20+ minutes after use, vent your dryer outdoors (a legal requirement, not a preference), avoid drying laundry on racks indoors, and if you have one, run the HRV. 3. Upgrade to lower-U glazing. This is the durable fix. Interior condensation wipes off with a cloth. Fog that sits inside the sealed glass unit and never wipes clean means the unit's seal has failed — the desiccant in the spacer is exhausted and the argon (if it was ever there) is gone. That window has quietly become a double-pane unit with single-pane performance, and no humidity adjustment fixes it. The repair is a new insulated glass unit, or a full window if the frame is shot. Condensation in new-build Toronto houses is a humidity problem, not a window problem
