What's different about European windows?

North American windows are built around a familiar double-pane, single-action formula. European systems take a different path entirely — and the differences show up in how the window performs, how it operates, and how long it lasts.

The differences start with how the window closes. European tilt-and-turn systems seal with multi-point locking hardware that pulls the sash against a full-perimeter gasket at several points — turn the handle and the entire edge compresses. That is why they stay airtight through years of freeze-thaw cycling, and airtightness is what preserves both thermal and acoustic performance through an Ontario winter.

On performance, European systems work in two tiers: standard lines at Uw 1.1–1.5 W/m²·K with efficient double glazing, and high-performance lines down to Uw ≤ 0.80 W/m²·K with triple glazing and warm-edge insulated glass units — roughly half the heat loss of a typical 1.5 double-pane unit, and less still against builder-grade windows. Certification is verifiable, not promotional: every PHI-certified system can be looked up by certificate number in the Passive House Institute component database.

The tell of a lookalike is in the details: single gaskets instead of double, single-point instead of multi-point locking, hardware that sags under triple-glazed sashes. The failure modes are predictable — drafts at the sash in February, condensation at the glass edge, handles that need adjusting within a season.
